Candidates' Forum to be Televised Live

A candidates’ forum for this year’s municipal election sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Greater Las Cruces will be televised live on the City of Las Cruces’ government access cable TV channel, Comcast cable channel 20.

The forum will be Tuesday, October 9th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall, 200 N. Church St.

Invited to participate in the televised forum are candidates for mayor, members of city council in districts 1, 2, 4, and presiding municipal court judge.

According to Donna Tate, League of Women Voters of Greater Las Cruces, “This is the first time a forum for candidates running for municipal office will be televised live. It will be an excellent opportunity for voters to get to know the candidates and learn about the issues.”

Members of the public are encouraged to show up early for the forum since seating is limited. Candidates will respond to questions submitted by those in attendance.

Live video streaming of the forum will be available at www.clctv.com. A live audio stream will also be available at www.las-cruces.org.

Mayor Mattiace Seeks Second Term

Serving as Mayor is rewarding, but it’s not easy. I know because I am the Mayor. Some people may want to enter the race at the encouragement of their friends and those who would seek to benefit from the office. But I only decided to enter the race after the encouragement of those who pay the price for my service, my family. When those you love, who oftentimes don’t get to see me all day, feel that it’s important that I continue, that says something. My family shares in my belief that the inspiration I get from the people of this city can be returned in what I know will be inspired leadership.

I seek re-election because we’ve come so far in such a short time. And for someone to come along and start tearing down what this city has accomplished simply because they want to get elected, is an insult to our citizens.

In the past four years I have led this council to many accomplishments. Our strategic plan has laid out a strong progressive path that has already paid off.

Thanks to our police and fire departments as well as our own citizens, we have reached such a high level of Public Safety that we were named The Safest Small City in America.

We have created and expanded Youth & After school programs that are nationally recognized, but more importantly, are keeping our kids safer and better educated.

We have built this city with responsible growth policies that incorporate community centers, senior centers and rehabilitation of our existing neighborhoods and roads. Our growth has always been about becoming better, not bigger. The growth in this city can be measured in our character, not just our number of homes.

This is very clear in our attention to community services, the care for our senior citizens, and our responsible management of utilities and taxpayer dollars.

A big part of our success has been in recruiting new businesses, creating new jobs and improving the jobs we already have. Not a decision goes before this council where we don’t closely consider what is the best way to ensure the prosperity of our citizens.

I have been honored and humbled to serve this city for eight years, more than four of them as Mayor. I have enjoyed facing the challenges of leading this council and the people of this city. This job requires more than just encouragement from friends or a simple lifelong dream to be mayor. It requires responsibility, dedication, leadership and diplomacy. I know because I am the Mayor. And I want to keep working for you.
